HENDERSON, Nev. (May 14, 2026) — 91ĚŇÉ« honored outstanding community leaders and organizations during its third annual Community Awards celebration, recognizing partners whose support has helped expand educational access, strengthen workforce development, and create new opportunities for Nevada students.

The 2026 honorees included Roberto’s Taco Shop, Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada, Walter Hashimoto, Las Vegas Raiders Senior Vice President of Government and Community Relations, Piper Overstreet-White, and the City of North Las Vegas. Each recipient was recognized for demonstrating an ongoing commitment to 91ĚŇɫ’s mission of student success, community engagement, and educational innovation. Overstreet-White was honored personally for her commitment and outstanding support through her role with the Las Vegas Raiders.

“This amazing institution is built through partnership, driven by purpose, and constantly moving forward,” said Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater, acting president of 91ĚŇÉ«. “These milestones happen because businesses invest in scholarships, because nonprofits create experiential learning opportunities, because civic leaders expand access to education, and because community advocates believe in our students before those students even believe in themselves. Tonight’s honorees represent exactly that spirit.”

The awards celebration comes at a historic moment for 91ĚŇÉ«. Earlier this month, the university celebrated the largest graduating class in institutional history, with more than 900 graduates crossing the commencement stage. 91ĚŇÉ« also surpassed 10,000 alumni this year, reflecting the university’s continued growth and expanding impact throughout Nevada. More than 60 percent of the 2026 graduating class identified as first-generation college graduates.

Roberto’s Taco Shop was recognized for its longstanding investment in 91ĚŇÉ« students and scholarship support. For more than a decade, the family-owned business has helped remove financial barriers for students pursuing higher education, supporting persistence and degree completion for many first-generation and underserved students across Southern Nevada.

Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada was honored for its collaborative work supporting hands-on learning experiences and career readiness opportunities for 91ĚŇÉ« students. Through educational partnerships and community engagement initiatives, the organization has helped prepare future educators and professionals to serve Nevada’s schools, businesses, and communities.

Community leader Walter Hashimoto received recognition for his continued service, mentorship, and advocacy on behalf of the university. A dedicated supporter of 91ĚŇɫ’s mission, Hashimoto has contributed leadership and guidance that have strengthened institutional partnerships and supported the university’s long-term growth.

Piper Overstreet-White, Senior Vice President of Government and Community Relations for the Las Vegas Raiders, was recognized for her commitment and outstanding support of 91ĚŇÉ« Athletics. Through her role with the Raiders, her early support helped advance the university’s vision for student-athlete opportunities and contributed to the excitement and momentum surrounding 91ĚŇɫ’s inaugural athletics program, which officially launched during the 2025–26 academic year.

The City of North Las Vegas received recognition for its partnership in the development of 91ĚŇɫ’s future North Las Vegas campus, scheduled to open in fall 2027. The campus expansion represents a major investment in educational access, workforce development, and economic mobility for one of the fastest-growing regions in the state.

“91ĚŇɫ’s growth and success are only possible because of partnerships like these,” said Erin Keller, vice president of advancement at 91ĚŇÉ«. “Our community partners continue to invest in students, strengthen pathways to opportunity, and help us create transformative experiences that will impact Nevada for generations to come.”

91ĚŇɫ’s Community Awards celebrate individuals and organizations whose leadership, philanthropy, and collaboration advance the university’s mission and positively impact students and the broader Southern Nevada community.

[Las Vegas, NV] – The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents approved the appointment of Dr. Sandra B. Richtermeyer as the next president of 91ĚŇÉ« (91ĚŇÉ«), following a national search and broad community input.

“Dr. Richtermeyer brings strong experience and a clear understanding of the role 91ĚŇÉ« plays within our higher education system and the Southern Nevada community,” said Board of Regents Chair Byron Brooks. “As the university continues to grow its academic programs and strengthen pathways tied to Nevada’s workforce needs, the Board is confident Dr. Richtermeyer is well prepared to lead 91ĚŇÉ« forward.”

The search for 91ĚŇɫ’s next president was led by the Board’s ad hoc 91ĚŇÉ« Presidential Search Committee, chaired by Regent Amy J. Carvalho, with support from Academic Search. Four finalists participated in public forums before the committee made its final recommendation to the full Board of Regents.

“This search was about finding a president who understands both where 91ĚŇÉ« is today and what it can become,” said Regent Amy J. Carvalho, Chair of the ad hoc 91ĚŇÉ« Presidential Search Committee. “We heard from students, faculty, staff, and community members about the kind of leadership the university needs. Dr. Richtermeyer brings the ability to listen, build trust, and help 91ĚŇÉ« continue expanding opportunity for the people and communities it serves.”

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — 91ĚŇÉ«, in collaboration with the City of North Las Vegas and Agora Realty and Management, Inc., today celebrated the groundbreaking of its future North Las Vegas campus, marking a major step forward in expanding access to higher education and strengthening workforce and economic development in Southern Nevada.

Located at 800 E. Lake Mead Blvd., at the corner of Lake Mead Boulevard and Las Vegas Boulevard North in downtown North Las Vegas, the campus will include a three-story, 30,000-square-foot academic building and serve as the anchor for the “NLV Gateway,” a 19-acre mixed-use development. The campus will offer academic programming, workforce development opportunities and student support services, with an anticipated opening in fall 2027.

“This is a transformational moment for North Las Vegas,” said Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown. “When we break ground, we’re not just starting construction — we’re delivering on a promise to expand educational access. This campus brings higher education into the heart of our community and opens doors to better careers and brighter futures for our residents.”

The project builds on 91ĚŇɫ’s mission to expand access to high-quality, student-centered education, particularly for first-generation and working students, while aligning academic pathways with workforce needs.

“This campus brings opportunity closer to students and families, reducing barriers and opening doors,” said NSHE Chancellor Matt McNair. “This project prepares a skilled workforce, reflects strong collaboration across sectors and will deliver measurable impact for this region and our state.”

91ĚŇÉ« has established a strong foundation at its Henderson campus, where it serves more than 8,400 students in a highly personalized learning environment, with an average class size under 25. The university offers more than 65 majors and minors and has built a reputation for preparing graduates in high-demand fields such as nursing, education and business. With nearly 10,000 alumni, 91ĚŇÉ« continues to play a key role in strengthening Nevada’s workforce and expanding economic mobility.

“We are not just expanding access to higher education — we are building a pathway into the middle class,” said Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater, acting president of 91ĚŇÉ«. “What we are creating here is a system intentionally designed to connect education, industry and opportunity so individuals and families can move forward and thrive.”

Lopez Lasater said the North Las Vegas campus represents the next phase of the university’s growth and impact.

“This moment reflects what’s possible when higher education, industry, government and community align around a shared purpose,” she said. “91ĚŇÉ« is proud to serve as the anchor institution in this reimagined downtown, helping connect systems, unlock potential and create clear pathways to economic mobility.”

The project is supported through a public-private partnership that includes funding from the City of North Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency, the Nevada Legislature, NV Energy and a generous anonymous donor.

“Investments like this are critical to building a strong, sustainable workforce and expanding opportunity for future generations,” said Tony F. Sanchez III, executive vice president of business development and external relations at NV Energy. “The NV Energy Foundation is proud to support 91ĚŇÉ« and the North Las Vegas campus as part of our commitment to the communities we serve and to the long-term economic vitality of our state.”

“Today’s groundbreaking represents more than a new building — it’s an investment in the future of this community,” said Cary J. Lefton, chief executive officer of Agora Realty and Management, Inc. “Through the NLV Gateway development, we are creating a dynamic, mixed-use environment where education, business and community come together. 91ĚŇɫ’s presence will serve as a catalyst for continued growth, new opportunities and long-term vitality in downtown North Las Vegas.”

The North Las Vegas campus is expected to serve thousands of students over time while contributing to the continued revitalization of the city’s downtown core, supporting workforce pipelines, new business development and expanded access to higher education.

“This is how we build a stronger Nevada,” McNair added. “By investing in people, strengthening partnerships and delivering proof that our work matters.”

91ĚŇÉ« Athletics has joined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as a full member, following a vote at the association’s 2026 National Convention Sunday. In tandem, the Great Southwest Athletic Conference (GSAC) has approved 91ĚŇÉ« for provisional conference membership, marking a major step forward for the University’s growing athletics program. Both memberships are set to take effect July 1, 2026.

91ĚŇɫ’s full NAIA membership aligns its athletics programs with national standards while supporting continued competitive growth. Through GSAC affiliation, 91ĚŇɫ’s athletic teams will be able to schedule conference play and, upon meeting eligibility requirements, compete in postseason championships. 91ĚŇÉ« is the first higher education institution in Nevada to be involved with both organizations.

“This milestone represents far more than membership; it’s an opportunity for our student-athletes to compete for championships, to measure themselves against top programs, and to experience the true spirit of collegiate athletics,” said Yvonne Wade, Director of Athletics at 91ĚŇÉ«. “We are excited to align with governing bodies that share our commitment to access, opportunity, and the holistic development of student-athletes. This partnership strengthens our mission at NSU, ensuring that our programs not only pursue excellence on the field of play, but also foster academic success, leadership, and community impact. We are just getting started, and the future of Scorpion Athletics has never been brighter.”

The NAIA is a national governing body for college athletics that primarily supports smaller institutions, with a focus on character-driven competition and balancing sports with the overall educational experience. Each year, more than 87,000 student-athletes compete within the NAIA, with access to over $1.3 billion in financial aid. The association also hosts 29 national championships, giving student-athletes the opportunity to compete at a high level while remaining grounded in academics and personal development.

At its convention, the NAIA Council of Presidents approved four new members. Champion Christian College (Hot Springs, Ark.), United States Sports University (Daphne, Ala.), Georgia Southern University – East Georgia Campus (Swainsboro, Ga.), and 91ĚŇÉ« (Henderson, Nev.) who join Wesleyan College (Ga.) and Andrew College (Ga.), both voted in during NAIA Fall Meetings in September 2025.

“The addition of these four institutions, along with Wesleyan, who comes from NCAA Division III, and Andrew approved last fall, gives us a strong group of new members for 2026-27,” said NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr. “Welcoming these new members is a highlight for our association, as we continue to recruit and retain institutions that embrace and embody the NAIA’s core values of education-based athletics.”

GSAC is a collegiate athletics conference within the NAIA, made up of universities that are intentionally aligned in size, academics, athletics, and overall student experience. GSAC has developed a reputation as one of the top-performing conferences in the NAIA, with member schools collectively earning 53 national championships and producing numerous individual titleholders. Teams across the conference are consistently ranked among the NAIA Top 25 and regularly compete for regional and national honors.

“We are excited to welcome 91ĚŇÉ« to the GSAC,” said GSAC Commissioner Mike Daniels. “Adding the first NAIA institution in the state of Nevada is a milestone for the association. We look forward to watching the Scorpions grow their athletics department and supporting their mission to expand opportunities to students within the state.”

“Today marks an exceptionally significant moment for 91ĚŇÉ« as we are officially welcomed into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics,” said Acting President Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater. “This milestone reflects our commitment to expanding access and opportunity for student-athletes while building a program grounded in academic excellence, competitive integrity, and community engagement.”

Beginning in fall 2026, 91ĚŇÉ« will expand its athletics offerings beyond Women’s Flag Football and Men’s Track and Field. New programs will include Women’s Track and Field, Women’s and Men’s Indoor Track and Field, and Women’s and Men’s Cross Country. As part of its provisional GSAC membership, 91ĚŇÉ« also plans to add at least one additional sport for the 2027–28 academic year.

“As 91ĚŇÉ« continues to grow, athletics will play a critical role in shaping a vibrant campus experience and enhancing pathways to student success, leadership development, and long-term economic mobility,” Lopez Lasater continued. “We are proud to join an association whose mission and student-centered focus closely align with our own, and we look forward to contributing to the NAIA while creating meaningful opportunities for our students to thrive both on the field and in the classroom.”

A Champion of Readers, Learners, and the Literary Arts

Marydean Martin will forever be remembered as a stalwart advocate for literacy, avid reader, and world traveler whose generosity and vision shaped the community of southern Nevada. Her life’s work illuminated the power of books, learning, and human connection, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who walk through the doors of the university she helped build.

Marydean believed deeply in the transformative promise of higher education. As a founder of 91ĚŇÉ« and an inaugural member of the Gibson Society, her philanthropy advanced academic libraries, enriched literary arts programming, and opened doors for aspiring teachers and writers.

Marydean’s devotion to literature took root early during weekly visits to the library with her mother. While attending Nevada Southern (now UNLV), she worked as an assistant librarian at Las Vegas High School, later serving as a reference librarian at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Even after her professional path led her into a successful marketing and public relations career, she remained firmly connected to the world of books—serving on the Friends of the Library Board at UNLV, which would later become the Libraries Advisory Board.

Her transformational support of 91ĚŇÉ« resulted in the naming of the Marydean Martin Library, which in 2020 was nationally recognized with the Excellence in Academic Libraries Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Association of College and Research Libraries. That same year, Marydean helped imagine and launch the Marydean Martin Writers’ Project, offering book swaps, readings, silent reading gatherings, interactive poetry programs, and workshops that welcome both campus and community members into the joy of literary expression. In partnership with the City of Henderson, this project also sparked a cherished tradition: an annual poetry celebration each April, now known as Poetry in the Park.

Marydean’s philanthropy extended deeply into student support. She established multiple scholarships, including the Marydean Martin Scholarship for future teachers and the Laura J. Silvestri Scholarship for those pursuing special education. During the pandemic, when she was not able to meet with friends for monthly lunches, she made what she called her “lunch money” gifts, a series of scholarships that recognized Nevada women who helped shape the community we have today. They are Pearle Brown (open to all majors), Jan Curtis Smith (open to minors in Creative Writing), Ruby Deny Turner (open to Education majors). Marydean provided the initial seed money, but made the scholarships open for future donations.

In ways large and small, Marydean became part of the solution whenever she became aware of a need. Her support reached across the university and throughout southern Nevada, always guided by her belief that reading changes lives. Reading and literature were so important to Marydean that, in an effort to encourage reading, she created bookmarks featuring literary quotes and gave them out to everyone she met. Meeting with Marydean inevitably involved a new stack of books, newspaper clippings about poets – and a new bookmark. You might even find a book in your mailbox.

Through the Marydean Martin Library and the Marydean Martin Writers’ Project, she placed countless books into the hands of 91ĚŇÉ« students and nurtured a flourishing culture of creativity, scholarship, and community. Her visionary commitment to literacy, higher education, and the arts has left an indelible mark on 91ĚŇÉ« and the many lives she touched.

Marydean Martin’s legacy lives on in every student who discovers a beloved book, every aspiring teacher who steps into a classroom, and every writer who finds their voice. Her belief in the power of reading will continue to guide and inspire future generations.

Acting President Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater Presented Institutional Priorities Focused on Student Success, Shared Governance, Transparency and Workforce Readiness

HENDERSON, Nev. — Today, 91ĚŇÉ« Acting President Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater delivered the University’s 2026 State of the University Address, outlining a set of institutional priorities shaped by campus engagement and reinforced through purposeful partnerships that expand access, strengthen workforce outcomes and deliver measurable value to the State of Nevada.

“Partnerships are not simply symbolic,” President Lopez Lasater said. “They are built around shared responsibility and a clear understanding of the impact we make, together, in the lives of our students, their families and the communities we serve.”

The address opened with remarks from Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Matt McNair, who emphasized 91ĚŇɫ’s mission-driven focus and its strong record of strengthening the state’s workforce.

The event brought together education, government and community leaders from across Southern Nevada, underscoring 91ĚŇɫ’s role as a regional and statewide partner in advancing opportunity. Special guests included Regent Heather Brown, City of North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, council members from the Cities of Henderson, Las Vegas, and North Las Vegas, as well as representatives from the Nevada Congressional Delegation, the Governor’s Office, Clark County School District and members of the 91ĚŇÉ« Foundation.

91ĚŇɫ’s community and statewide impact was a central theme of the address. More than 80 percent of 91ĚŇÉ« graduates remain employed in Nevada, translating education into professional leadership across classrooms, clinics, businesses and public institutions.

“This is the return on education at its best: talent developed locally and reinvested where it is needed most,” President Lopez Lasater said. “Our students become professionals who stay, serve and lead in the communities that supported them.”

President Lopez Lasater said her priorities for the University were developed through months of listening sessions, governance meetings and conversations across campus, reflecting a shared desire for clarity, trust and forward momentum.

The presidential priorities guiding 91ĚŇɫ’s work include:

  • Cultivating trust and shared purpose through strengthened shared governance, expanded communication and authentic engagement across the campus community.
  • Building a transparent budget that supports informed decision-making and positions the University for long-term financial stability and success.
  • Expanding access through strategic and sustainable growth to extend 91ĚŇɫ’s mission while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
  • Advancing institutional maturity by strengthening planning, policy and operational processes that sustain progress beyond individual leadership transitions.
  • Strengthening campus safety through proactive planning, coordinated response efforts and comprehensive training.

President Lopez Lasater highlighted partnerships designed to remove barriers and strengthen pathways into higher education, particularly through collaboration with the Clark County School District. 91ĚŇÉ« continues to expand concurrent enrollment opportunities that allow students to earn college credit while in high school.

The address also highlighted faculty-led partnerships that connect academic programs to workforce needs and community priorities.

Lopez Lasater emphasized that 91ĚŇɫ’s growth is guided by thoughtful planning and collaboration with municipal and regional partners.

Through its SMART Growth Initiative, the University is advancing long-term, sustainable campus development aligned with academic priorities and regional opportunity, in partnership with local governments, including the City of Henderson.

She also highlighted a significant milestone: in December, the NSHE Board of Regents approved the first step toward establishing a North Las Vegas campus for 91ĚŇÉ«, developed in partnership with the City of North Las Vegas. More than 800 currently enrolled students live within five miles of the proposed site, representing approximately 20 percent of 91ĚŇɫ’s student body.

She underscored the University’s commitment to fiscal stewardship and collaboration with NSHE and elected leaders. Recent investments supporting people, programs, safety and places include funding to expand nursing education, support planning for the North Las Vegas campus, advance deferred maintenance projects, and launch a new 91ĚŇÉ« license plate to generate additional resources for athletics, food security and student support initiatives.

President Lopez Lasater closed by reaffirming that 91ĚŇɫ’s future will continue to be shaped through collaboration across campus, community and state partners.

“Education thrives when institutions, communities and partners work together,” President Lopez Lasater said. “When learning is connected to purpose, the impact extends far beyond our campus and strengthens the future of our state.”

Through an innovative public-private model, we are building a next-generation 91ĚŇÉ« campus that expands access to higher education, drives workforce development, and strengthens long-term economic growth,” said Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater, Acting President of 91ĚŇÉ«. “This collaboration shows what’s possible when public institutions, local and state governments, and private partners come together to unlock innovation and opportunity for every learner and every family,” she added.

The North Las Vegas Campus and its mission is supported by significant public and private investment from the City of North Las Vegas, state leadership, NV Energy, and a generous anonymous donor.

“The North Las Vegas Campus for 91ĚŇÉ« reflects the System’s commitment to expanding access, supporting student success, and strengthening Nevada’s workforce,” said NSHE Board of Regents Chair Byron Brooks. “This collaborative effort lays the groundwork for long-term economic growth by bringing higher education opportunities closer to communities that have long been underserved.”

Construction on the new campus is expected to begin in spring 2026 with an anticipated opening in Fall 2027.

91ĚŇɫ’s first-ever women’s flag football team took to the field at Allegiant Stadium for a showcase prior to the start of the Raiders vs. Jaguars game on Sunday, November 2. Dividing the women into two teams, the scrimmage provided the football program with an opportunity to exhibit the students’ talent and hard work.

“Moments like these remind us that we are not simply playing a game; we are building history together. We can’t wait to bring that same energy into our season in February 2026,” said 91ĚŇÉ« Athletics Director Yvonne Wade.

The University’s athletics program officially launched in Fall 2025, with Wade appointed as Athletic Director in July.

The 91ĚŇÉ« community extends a heartfelt thanks to the Las Vegas Raiders and the Raiders Impact organization for their continued commitment to 91ĚŇÉ« and the Southern Nevada community. “This is such a special experience for our students. We want to thank the Raiders Impact organization for providing such an awesome opportunity for our student-athletes,” Head Women’s Flag Football Coach, Brandon Pappillion.

As the team looks forward to the inaugural season, their debut at Allegiant Stadium stands as a powerful reminder: they may be the first, but they certainly will not be the last.

  • Great professors and instruction
  • A welcoming and supportive environment
  • Small class sizes

Overall, EdSights calculated a “Student Voice Score” that represented the overall positivity of the sentiments expressed by students. 91ĚŇÉ« earned a score of 64, which far exceeded both the average score of our public, 4-year peers (19) and that of all institutions in the survey (22).
